Bio

Nir de Volff was born in Israel, where he studied dance and took his first steps into the local professional companies. In Tel Aviv he was a guest for Pina Bausch’s Viktor at the Israeli Opera House. In 2000 he moved to Amsterdam and started to create his own work. In 2004 he moved to Berlin and created his first piece for Sophiensaele Tanztage Festival. In the summer of 2007, he founded his company TOTAL BRUTAL. Since then, the company has been working at Dock 11 as a base, and in 2013 the company expanded productions in the Sophiensaele. On September 2014, Total Brutal premiered at the prestige theater Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz. This project was a collaboration with the theater director Falk Richter, and became incorporated into the repertoire. Nir de Volff also collaborates with artists such as the group She She Pop at HAU Berlin, Katarina Niminnen at 3. Stock Volksbühne and with Fouad Muhamed (Cairo). De Volff creates international cultural exchange projects mixing social-political subjects with entertainment values. TOTAL BRUTAL works with a wide range of professional performers and different theaters, ranging from small to national. The work has been seen in theaters such as Oper Frankfurt, Grand Theatre Groningen, Rotterdamse Schouwburg, ZIL Culture Centre Moscow, SESC Pinheiros (São Paulo), Esplanade Theatre ( Singapur), Bangkok National Center for Dramatic Art, Stadttheater St. Pölten (Österreich), Warehouse 2 (Jaffa Port), Tel Aviv, Ponec Theatre (Prag), Teatro Alle Tese (Venedig), Old Court Building (Macao), Amphithéâtre de Gesù (Montréal), among others cities in Germany and around the world. In 2015-16 the work was also seen at Maxim GORKI theater in Berlin in the frame of Nurkan Erpulat’s latest show.

Class description

In the last few years, De Volff has developed the Use-Abuse-method, a method which explores our somatic structure and its harmonic-disharmony relation with our breathing system. Use-Abuse focuses on somatic areas which we often tend to ignore and asks to bring them alive. The method aims to research the harmonization and coordination between the body and the emotional system of dancers, actors and performers. De Volff’s method stimulates freedom and honesty in the bodies of the individual. It demands that one neglect self-judgement. While this method was designed to find greater range within a physical practice, other by-products appeared through the participant’s exploration of this technique, some of which were social, political or therapeutic. Use-Abuse has been invited to prestige dance centers around the world. De Volff’s style offers a new dimension for movements, as well as a new exploration of the body „as we know it“. This method, the search for a total freedom of the muscles, leads dancers to a new physical sensation and expansion of their borders. It allows creativity to be daily explored in the studio with the intention of leaving behind limitations and habits. The class starts with a long section of self-exploration and evolves into a high level of energy within TOTAL BRUTAL’s movement style.
