Training for Dancers
Milla Koistinen graduated from the Theatre Academy of Helsinki, Finland with a MA in dance and from HfS Ernst Busch/HZT Berlin with a MA in choreography. She has worked with Kristian Smeds, Hiroaki Umeda, Peter Verhelst (NTGent/Johan Simons), Cie Heddy Maalem, Christine Gaigg, Hans van den Broeck and Les Ballets du Grand Maghreb, among others. Since 2008 she has been creating her own work. Her creations have been played in locations such as Tanzhaus NRW, Mad House Helsinki, HAU Hebbel-am-Ufer, Ballhaus Ost, Uferstudios Berlin, Salzburg Sommerszene Festival and in ICE HOT Nordic Dance Platform. Koistinen has worked as a guest teacher at SEAD, the Iceland Academy of the Arts, Tanzhaus NRW, Sasha Waltz & Guests, Toula Limnaios Company, Staatstheater Braunschweig, Munich DancePAT, Tanzhaus Zürich, Theatre Academy of Helsinki, the University of Tampere, HZT Berlin, Marameo and DOCK 11 in Berlin, Espace Catastrophe in Brussels and PAC Ramallah.
The class will focus on exercises and methods Milla uses in diverse ways, in her work as a choreographer, performer and teacher. The exercises are designed to evoke precision, clarity, lightness, energy, presence and dynamics. Through listening and observing the body, the participants practice moving in an alert and articulated way. Working with a variety of given material and improvisations, the body is demanded to adapt and connect information quickly. The aim of the class is to work with tools that enable detailed, effortless, energetic and inventive ways of moving.
